| The
scenery is so spectacular that even the amateur
photographer is certain to come away with exciting
Grand Canyon pictures. There are only a few
pointers to keep in mind: color displays are
most dramatic at sunrise and sunset and early
morning and late afternoon—when the sun
is at an angle. Later in the day when the sun
is more overhead, the colors tend to flatten.
Clouds can provide striking silhouettes and
contrasts of canyon features. For long distance
shots, such as the river or wildlife, you'll
need a telephoto lens.
The Park newspaper,The Guide, which you receive
when you enter the park, lists sunrise and sunset
times. Some favorite vantage points for photographing
both sunsets and sunrises are Mather, Yavapai,
and Imperial Point. Less accessible picture
points, but especially appreciated by the hobbyist
or professional, are Point Sublime on the North
Rim and Toroweap Overlook on the West Rim.
For the photographer with special equipment,
Bright Angel Point (North Rim) at full moon
provides an ethereal picture setting. Bring
flashlight and jacket.
Moran
Point on Desert View Drive, named after American
artist Thomas Moran, is a favorite photographer's
and artist's point. Moran's Grand Canyon landscapes
helped convince Congress to preserve this landmark
as a national park.
Photography Tours
Imperial
Tour combines North Rim and Eastern
Gorge views, the Painted Desert, and Colorado
River. Papillon's 45-50 minute tour by helicopter
is a photographer's Dream Come True.
